Back in November I had a post entitled “Nuts for Pistachios” where I wrote about the advertising push by Paramount Farms to promote their Wonderful Pistachios. In addition to doing nationwide TV spots, they held a contest asking folks to do their own advertisement on how they crack open pistachios. They recently announced the winner, and so I thought I’d post it here. Singer/musician DeStorm Power from Brooklyn, NY took home $25,000 for creating the below video:

Of the video entries Paramount posted on the GetCrackin’ website, this was the one I personally voted for. It has a fresh sound and a positive vibe that fits nicely with how Paramount is trying to brand their Wonderful Pistachios (i.e. healthy, fun to eat, etc). Nice work DeStorm! Who would have thought ten years ago a company could post a contest like this, and get this kind of result back. Fantastic.

A couple months ago a coworker asked me what some of my most favorite and memorable tv ads were from a branding and advertising perspective (i.e. something that has a lasting impact, not just a “herding cats” impact). It was a good question, and the first commercial that came to mind was a commercial for Cadillac featuring Tiki Barber that came out in 2007 (debuted during the Super Bowl that year).

The core essence of this thirty-second spot is fantastic as it focuses on opportunity using a personal experience. I think most of us hope that we are living our lives just the same way – preparing for the opportunity that might come in the future. Throughout the spot it shows Tiki in his Escalade – and in an amazingly humble way you totally feel like he deserves that Escalade (and that hopefully one day, each of us can have our Escalade too – either literally or figuratively). While the visuals of the Escalade driving are great, without a doubt, it’s Tiki’s comments that make the commercial relatable and memorable. Two thumbs up to Cadillac on this commercial (even if it is two years old ; ).
